Sewing Basics- Embroidery Machines

I thought I'd add a post to the Sewing Basics Series and talk about Embroidery Machines.

I live in the south and we personalized EVERYTHING, especially stuff for our children. When I learned to sew I knew I wanted to be able to personalize the clothing I made.

My first embroidery machine was a sewing/embroidery machine combo, a Singer Futura CE150. It has all the basic features I need for a sewing machine and the ability to do embroidery. It took me a little while to get used to it but now I just love it. I have since upgrade to a more advanced embroidery machine but I still use this machine for all of my sewing.

When I was running my children's sewing business and sewing daily I realized that the Singer machines embroidery option just could not keep up with the hours I was putting on it so I invested in an embroidery only machine. I got a Brother PE770. This machine has more upgrades and runs a little faster than my Singer. I absolutely love it. But I will say if you are only planning on sewing as a hobby a sewing/embroidery combo machine is all you need.

Taking back the house

Anyone else feel like their home has been taken over by the effects of Christmas? I know I do. Our house has looked like a toy store blew up in it since 7:30 A.M. on December 25th. For the first few days I thought it was fun to let the girls just enjoy their presents, after that it got to the point of "I just don't want to deal with finding a place for it", now I just can't take it anymore and have declared war with the toys. I'm taking back my house.

Tonight we are cleaning, sorting and finding a home for everything. My 5 year old has a hard time parting with toys so I have been pleasantly surprised that she has actually put somethings into the donate and pass it on to my little sister piles I create for her. However I have been overwhelmed with all the little Happy Meal/ under $5 toys that we have and how attached she is to each and every one of them.

Fire Cracker Recipe

1 Box of Saltine Crackers

1 Cup of Canola Oil

1 Package of Ranch Dip Mix

1 Tablespoon of Crushed Red Pepper

Put canola oil, ranch dip mix, and crushed red pepper into bowl and mix it up. Put crackers into a large container with a lid, pour mixture over crackers. Put lid on container. Flip container back and forth until crackers are well coated. Let crackers sit for a 5 hours, occasionally flipping container though out this time period. Enjoy!

What I'm Working On This Week

This week I am working on Christmas presents. Lots of them! Unfortunately I can't show them to you since it would spoil the suprise.

I have also been working on these Christmas placemats for my kitchen table. I bought some cheap red placemats at Walmart and have been appliqueing C's in lime green zebra print. They have turned out so cute. I love them so much I have decided that I am going to make a non-holiday set to use after Christmas.

What I'm Making Monday

I thought it would be fun to start a new series on the blog, called What I'm Making Monday's. This will give us a chance to show what we are currently working on. It can be any type of project; Sewing, Craft, Scrapbooking, Home Organization, Kids Crafts, Cooking, Party Planning, Etc.... If you have a business you can share orders you are working on.

This week I am working on alot of sewing projects, some personal some Christmas presents.

Here are 4 lounge sets I am working on. The two matching ones are for my girls. The other two are for christmas presents.

5 Pairs of Flannel Pajama Pants. These are for my girls. They love these. I've already make them a few pairs of these and they love wearing them. They are super soft and comfy.

I think I am going to be busy this week.

It's less overwhelming to look at when it's all nicely stacked.

Since I have gotten my embroidery machine fixed I have been sewing alot. Here is an outfit I made for my girls to wear for Thanksgiving. The pants were made over the summer so I just had to make a matching shirt. They turned out so cute. I absolutely love the color combo. Unfortunately we had a few wardrobe malfunctions Thanksgiving night. when my oldest put her pants on We discovered she had grown at least 2 inches since she had last worn her pants and they were way to short. We had to pair her shirt with a pair of knit ruffle pants. Lucy got to wear her outfit as far as my grandmothers driveway. She got carsick as we were pulling up the drive so she got an bath and an outfit change the minute we walked in. No one got to see them in their adorable outfits, but at least I got to see how cute they looked and take a few pictures before we left.

This year I am very Thankful for all of my wonderful customers. Last year after my 2nd child was born I was so worried about not being able to keep up with my Children's Clothing Business. When I started my pattern business I had high hopes but I never imagine the success I am having. Thank you all so much for making my dream come true. I have been able to stop making children's clothing and just focus on patterns. The extra time this allows me with my family is precious and I am forever grateful.

I hope each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and get to spend some time with the ones you are most thankful for.

I got up early today and went to have my embroidery machine checked out again. This time I took everything and the repair guy and I sat down and I showed him my problem. He was immediately able to locate the problem, do a little sanding and I was back in business. I had to hold myself back from jumping up and doing the happy dance right there in the store.

I couldn't get my little one down for nap and my oldest settled down for quiet time fast enough today. I immediately headed back into my little sewing area and made the Christmas Tree shirts. They turned out so cute.

I am so happy to have my crafty time back. Caring for two small children can be a little hectic some days. The time I am able to focus on something besides cleaning and childcare are precious to me. I definitely have been in a much better mood this afternoon thanks to my "me" time.

Frustrated

For the past few MONTHS I have been without my embroidery machine. For a while it had an issue but if I was patient I could usually fight with the machine enough to get it to work properly. Then finally it won the fight and I had to take it into the shop. After it was at the shop for a few weeks I went to pick it up, only to bring it home and discover the problem is still there.

To say I am frustrated is a huge understatement. Thankfully the shop I take it to is very nice and they have offered me to come in and let us try and work out the problem together. Now I just have to find time to make the drive in and meet with the man (and someone to watch the girls while I go).
I miss my machine. This is my favorite time of year to sew and I desperately want to finish my daughters holiday outfits. Let's keep our fingers crossed I can get it fixed this week.

My little sewing area.... in a place you'd never imagine

A few years ago I had an entire room in my house to sew in. You can check it out here. When We were expecting our second child I knew I would have to relocate my sewing equipment. I though about all the areas in our house and finally decided to move into the master closet.

My husband and I have a large walk in closet with built in organizers with shelves and drawers. At the time We kept all of our clothing in the closet and most of our bedroom furniture was empty. We had both been complaining that we had way to many clothes that we never wore. So we decided to downsize our wardrobes and move some clothing into our the bedroom furniture.

It took some creative organizing but it has been a great place for me to sew. I use our dinning room table to cut out patterns on and the rest of the sewing takes place in the closet. It's nice and quiet in there and it's in an area of the house where we don't have alot of traffice so I get some "me" time.

I have a few storage bins for storing my fabric, fabric scraps, sewing patterns, embroidery thread and tshirts in.

I have a folding table and chair that I use to sew on.

Here are my serger and sewing machine.

When I am embroidering I place the embroidery machine up front. I have a small table beside the folding table that I store the embroidery machine on when I am not using it.

Here is a shelving unit that I purchase to store my bolts of fabric and other sewing items on. I keep my cutting board behind it.

And here is one of my little assistants. Giving up my sewing room for her nusery was definetley worth it. Seeing this sweet girl sleeping happily in her crib every night it much better than a spacious area the sew :)

Sewing Basics- A tip for beginners

Some of the best advice I received when I started sewing was to go out and purchase some cheap fabric to practice with. Good quality fabric usually cost $8-$12 per yard so learning using the "good stuff" can get kind of expensive.

When I started out sewing I went to our local Wal-mart and I picked up about 5 yards of basic fabric for $1 per yard. I cut out a few strips and practiced sewing my basic stitches and techniques (like ruffling and button holes). Once I had them down I cut out my pattern and sewed it together. Good thing I used my cheap fabric, the first couple things I made turned out awful and ended up in the trash. I wanted to give up, but I kept on trying because I really wanted to learn to sew. Luckily with each attempt I got better. After 2 or 3 tries I was making pretty clothes. When I finally used pretty, good quality fabric my mistakes were few and my daughter was actually able to wear the outfit I made.

I know from experience getting started sewing can be frustrating and Sewing machines aren't the easiest things to operate. Just be sure and give yourself plenty of time to practice and don't expect the results to be perfect the first couple tries.

Sewing Basics- The difference in finishing a seam with a serger and using a zig zag stitch

You can create a finished seam using two different methods: The zig zag stitch method and using a serger. Alot of beginning sewers only have sewing machines so I have included a short tutorial with all of Livi Stitches Patterns that teaches you to create a finished seam using the zig zag stitch on a sewing machine.

Below are examples of the difference in appearance of the two methods. The serger does produce a more clean appearance but both methods work well. The zig zag method is great for beginners who are skill learning and aren't ready to add a serger to their sewing tools.

It's my favorite time of year, time to make holiday outfits! I finally feel motivated and things are slowly getting made. This year I have two girls to make outfits for. Instead of matching outfits I have been creating alot of coordinating outfits.

Anyone else sewing for the holidays? What are you creating?

That was the question of the night last night when I took my girls to a local Trunk or Treat. And unfortunately the answer was No. I took the easy route and ordered them from Amazon. My oldest daughter picked the theme this year. She wanted to be Ariel so I decided to dress the baby up as Flounder. I figure I only have a few years left that I can get by with coordinating their costumes.

Getting asked if you made something seems to be the biggest side effect of sewing (especially in a small town where everyone knows you can sew). It seems like I hear that question with every outfit my children wear. I am always honored though that people have so much confidence in me. Halloween costumes would be pretty complicated so I felt extra honored last night :)

Sewing Basics- Using Non-Traditional Fabric

When making clothes for the kids I often have trouble finding the fabric I want in a fabric traditionally used for making clothing, like cotton, corduroy, flannel, etc... Occasionally I'll find what I'm looking for but it will be in a drapery type fabric. This is a medium weight duck canvas with the images printed onto the fabric. At first I wasn't comfortable about trying something different but I finally gave it a try and discovered that this type of fabric works great for kids clothes. It is thicker than cotton so it is warmer during the fall/winter months and is very durable.

I do follow the washing instructions and only wash in cold water with mild detergent and air dry. I also wash these items by themselves because I have experienced some minor bleeding in the wash.

The best part is it opens up alot of different fabric print options. Both the elephant and orange zebra print fabrics are the drapery style fabric. They are both my current favorites in my girls closets and we get tons of compliments on them.

Overflowing

I have am starting to have a scrap fabric problem. When I first started sewing a few different people told me that I should always keep my scraps that are large enough to make small items with. So I started a scrap bin. Well that one filled up and I started a second one. I now have three bins and they are all completely full. I think it's finally time I break down and sort through the bins and pass some of the scraps on to someone who will put them to good use. They would make beautiful quilts. I use my scraps to create appliques on shirts. At this point there is no way I'll ever use it all on my own. Anyone interested in scrap fabric bundles?

While I was working tonight my sweet girl asked if she could help and "sew like Mommy". Well I couldn't possibly tell her no so I asked her to put all my scraps in the bins for me. She was so cute talking about all the pretty colors and pretending to put clothes together. She made quite a few scarves.

I absolutely love personalized items. They make my house feel some homey. I have quite a few personalized items around the house but these are my two most recent additions

The pumpkin came from Hobby Lobby. When we tornadoes came through Alabama the Hobby Lobby closest to me was destroyed. I have missed it dearly. When my husband and I went out recently in a neighboring town I was so excited to see that they had a Hobby Lobby. They had all the fall and Christmas decorations out and I was just in love. I had to use some serious restraint to walk out with just this pretty pumpkin.

I am pretty proud of this C for my front door because I made it. It is in honor of Alabama football. However I completely admit that painting is not one of my skills. There are many mistakes. Luckily we live pretty far from the road so people can't see my mistakes driving by and the people that visit love me despite the fact that I can't paint a perfect polka dot.

Lack of Inspiration

I recently ordered some shirts for my daughters to make their special occassion outfits for fall and the holidays. Unfortunately since the shirts have come in my inspiration level has been zero. Every time I sit down to put together an idea I just come up with blanks. I keep hoping that if I let the stack sit there long enough I will eventaully walk past it and come up with something cute. I know I want to make ruffle pants and applique shirts. I just have to come up with fabric combinations and pick out which applique designs I want to use. Decisions, decisions....

Ready for football!

We live in the south so football season is a big deal around here. Our family is a University of Alabama family. We live close to the University, I attended college there for a while and that is were I worked before I quit my job to stay home and raise my children. We love Alabama !!!

I'll admit I don't actually enjoy watching football and the only play I can identify is a touchdown :)
But I do love football season. The excitment, tailgating, the yummy food, the rivalrys, football parties, decorating my house, and most of all dressing my girls in their team colors. One of my favorite football season traditions is creating outfits for all our football season events.

The University of Alabama is all about elephants and houndstooth. I discovered this fabric last year and knew it would be perfect. I decided to do coordinating outfits instead of matching and I just love the way they turned out. Each girl got exactly the right outfit for the stage they are in. Olivia loves dresses and all things girly so I did a dress for her. Lucy is crawling right now so dresses don't work for her so I did a peasant top. Each girl got a pair of ruffle pants. They also have appliqued tees made to match their pants for casual occassions.

The Perfect Place to Start- Isabelle Pillowcase Dress Pattern

Almost 4 years ago when I started sewing a pillowcase dress was the first thing I made. It was easy to make and required very little experience. I think I was able to complete the dress in less than an hour. I remember being so proud of that dress. It was my daughters first Christmas and I wanted something special for her to wear to my family's christmas party. She looked so adorable and I was so happy. Even now when I look back at the pictures I can remember how excited I was about being able to make that dress.

Livi Stitches Patterns now has a pillowcase dress pattern available. It is called the Isabelle Dress and features sizes 6-12M, 12-18, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

This pattern is very detailed and will allow you to make a boutique quaily dress.
However, it is a very simple pattern and requires only basic sewing skills. The pattern can be completed in about an hour.

If you have been wanting to learn to sew but weren't sure where to start, I would suggest this pattern.
It really is simple and is definetely the perfect place to start.

I guess computers need vacations too!

I haven't been blogging recently because my computer decided it needed a vacation and crashed. It had been showing signs for a while but it finally crashed last week. At first the computer guy I took it to thought it would be an easy fix but it ended up needing a new motherboard so we are waiting on the part to come in. I probably should get a new laptop but I am attached to the one I have. I have slowly had to replace parts over the years, eventually it will be like a brand new one.

For now I am sharing a computer with my hubby. We don't share technical stuff well so this has been an adventure. 6 years ago, shortly after we got married he took me shopping for a laptop. Once we got there and I picked one out I noticed he was carrying a laptop around as well. When I asked him about it he said we'd probably end up fighting over it so he was getting one too. Ever since then that has been our strategy for technical stuff and it works well. Thankfully we have both been busy recently so sharing hasn't been too tough. I just miss having all my work stuff available so I can tackle projects when I am actually motivated to do them.

Sewing Basics- How to store your patterns

After I started sewing I realized that I needed to come up with a way to store my patterns. I usually draw my patterns onto Reynolds Freezer Paper and I had multiple pattern styles in multiple sizes. They were taking up of space and I didn't want to fold them up to store them.

I purchased a thin container and some file folders. I labeled the file folder with the name of the pattern and would store all the different sizes for that pattern inside the bin. Over time I had added lots of new patterns and I still have tons of space in that small container. I am able to keep this stored on a shelf in one of my closets and it takes up very little space. The best part is when I want to make something all my patterns are stored together and easy to find.

I recently discovered Pinterest. At first I wasn't too sure about it and honestly was kind of confused but once I had it figured out I loved it!!! What a great idea! Now I don't feel like my web surfing is a complete waste of time. My ideas are stored away just waiting for me to put them to good use.

Sewing Basics- Assembly Line Sewing

I am currently working on some pants and shorts for my oldest daughter.
My main style of sewing is assembly line style sewing. This method works best for me because it allows me to get alot done in a short amount of time.

Assembly line style sewing is when you complete multiple pieces at once. I start out by cutting out 5-10 pieces, then do all the serging and finally I'll do all my work on the sewing machine. This works for me because I can work in sections. I'll often take days off in between but when I finally finish I'll have alot finished.

I currently have 8 pairs of shorts/pants cut out so I have alot to work on this week.

One of my weaknesses is FABRIC! I love it and have boxes of it. I live out in the country, so I usually purchase fabric in bulk. I mainly shop online to get the best prices but I will occassionally shop at a fabric store. I'll usually purchase a yard or two of fabric in a few different patterns. It is like Christmas when the package arrives. The problem with this is the fabric often ends up in my fabric box for a while. I have currently put myself on a fabric purchasing freeze until my box has more room in it.

One of the biggest things I have learned about purchasing fabric is that you get what you pay for. Cheaper fabric often means thinner fabric that doesn't make good quality clothing. On average I have noticed that $8-$9 per yard is the average price for good fabric. Just watch for sales and you can get it cheaper.

Years before I started selling patterns I had an online children's clothing boutique. One of the hardest parts of having my own business was getting my name out there. This involved me sending the blogger an item to review and keep, then sending one of their readers a free item. I tried it twice and honestly in the end I wasn't happy with my experience. Back to School Sewing

Fall and Back to school are just around the corner. This year instead of fighting the crowds and spending alot of money I decided to sew my daughters clothing. My fabric box is overflowing with fabric that I have purchased but never gotten around to doing anything with. It has been fun finally putting it to good use. I have mostly made pants and shorts since that is what my daughter likes best. I discovered that Kmart is a great place to get cheap cute tops so we stocked up on lots of different colors and styles. Since I saved so much I was able to splurge and get her a couple pairs of shoes. Now I just have to make hairbows and we will be all set for Fall!

Livi Stitches Patterns has a new pattern available. It is called the Vivian Dress. It is a knot dress. I love this dress, its one of my favorite dresses to make. The results are always amazing and this dress definetely gets alot of attention. The style of the dress alows for YEARS of wear thanks to the adjustable straps. What started out as a dress can be later worn as a shirt with a pair of ruffle pants.

The Vivian Dress is really simple to make. The step by step tutorial that comes with the pattern will guide through through the entire process. This dress is a great weekend project and can be made in about 2 hours.

I have two hobbys; Sewing and Photography. Yesterday I was able to enjoy them both. I made my little Lucy a new dress using Livi Stitches Pattern Ava Dress Pattern. When I finished I loved it so much I just had to go take her picture in it. The sky was overcast yesterday and that always works in my favor when taking pictures. Plus my little model was in a good mood. She is sitting up and all smiles these days. It's so easy to photograph her since she isn't mobile yet.

I enjoyed myself working on these projects. Even though they involved the girls I was getting to enjoy myself and work on something I like. Sewing relaxs me. My sewing area is tucked away in our master closet so I enjoy just getting to work on something in peace and quiet. With photography I enjoy getting to create beautiful memories any time I want. I get to photograph my girls when they are at their best, not just when we have an appointment with a photographer.

Sewing Basics- Stitches

In sewing children's clothing I really only use 2 stitch settings on my machine; Straight Stitch and Zig Zag Stitch. I know when you are just getting started all these terms can be confusing. Most sewing machines have pictures that represent your stitch settings. I hope this will help you to be able to better identify the stitch you are looking for when sewing.

A straight stitch is your most basic and most used stitch.

I don't use my Zig Zag stitch that often since I have a serger, but if many use this stitch to create a professional seam when sewing seams together.

Sewing TipDon't Forget to Back Stitch! Back stitching is when you sew in reverse just a few stitches at the beginning and end of a seam. This will prevent your seams from unraveling.

Since I got married 6 years ago I have received countless baby shower invitations. I love baby showers! Yummy food, happy people and oh-so-sweet baby items, what's not to love. Baby Bib Pattern

Livi Stitches Patterns has a new pattern available, Baby Bib Pattern.
This is a great pattern and is so easy. You can sew up a couple of these in one afternoon. If you have a baby shower coming up, these bibs make a great gift.

And My sweet little Lucy got a chance to do some modeling for Livi Stitches. Didn't she do a great job? Her big sister seemed to enjoy being on the opposite end of the camera this time. She jump around and made silly faces. All I had to do was snap the camera, they did all the hard work.

Stepping out of my comfort zone

Two years ago a friend of the family approached me about making her flower girl dresses. I'll admit my first thought was absolutely no. I make casual clothes and the idea of doing something formal scared me to death. Plus what if they turned out awful and I ruined the wedding. I also knew there would be alot of people attending this wedding so if I messed up everyone would know it. I pushed my fears aside and really thought about it. After I consulting with my husband and mother in law I decided to take on the job. I am so happy to say It was a fabulous experience and everything went smoothly. Nothing like what my fears had me convienced it would be like. The bride was happy, the flower girls and thier mommys were happy and I got to experience an amazing pride in myself the day of the wedding. Seeing those pretty little dresses going down the isle is a moment I will never forget. It was completely worth it.

Now I am having to conqure some fears again with my business. For about a year I have really wanted to start a pattern business. Unfortunately creating clothes and taking care of my family wasn't leaving any time for pattern designing. Last month I finally decided that the only way I was going to get my pattern business going was to stop taking orders for clothes and put all my focus on my patterns. I have been able to get 4 patterns completed so far and I currently have 3 dress patterns that I am working on. I can't wait to get them completely finished and available for sale. I know that variety is important to the success of a pattern shop so I'm excited to be adding to my collection.

For you local people I am also considering teaching a sewing class. It would be a small class where I would teach you how to make a specific Livi Stitches Pattern. I would teach you step by step how to make the item and at the end of the class you would have a completed item to take home. The class would be 2-3 hours long. Just curious how much interest I might have??? I would need 4-8 people per class.

One of the biggest lesson I have learned as a business owner is that sometime you have to step outside of your comfort zone. It isn't always easy, but most of the time it's worth it.

Sewing Basics- Is sewing really worth the investment?

In the last couple posts I have talked about sewing machines, sergers and sewing tools. I'm sure some of you might have been thinking, "that's alot of money to invest in a hobby". It is alot of money so I invested slowly. Instead of buying it all that once I have added items and equipment over time. I started out with an inexpensive sewing machine then upgraded as I felt comfortable. The serger was purcahsed once I had mastered a basics on the sewing machine and was ready to move on to designs that needed a finished seam. Tools I slowly picked up on various shopping trips. Start out with the basics and slowly add what you need.

For me deciding if it was worth the investment was comparing the cost of children's clothing to my investment in my sewing equipment. These days a boutique children's outfit with a dress and pants can be anywhere from $50-$75. At those prices it only takes sewing a few outfits for me to get my money back. The more outfits I make the more I am saving and the bigger wardrobe my girls have. Now that I have two girls I am really seeing the savings. I like matching outfits but if I bought them in a boutique I'd be looking at at least $100. I can usually make both girls an outfit for under $15.

Sewing Basics- Sewing Tools

When you start purchasing all the tools you need to start sewing it can be so confusing. There are walls and walls of stuff inside craft stores. When you are a beginner it feels impossible to know what you'll need.
Below are my tried and true tools that I use regularly in making children's clothing. Those of you reading that sew, what tools do you use? What tools are your favorites?

Bias Tape Maker

A bias tape maker is such a useful tool. Many little dresses need to have the seams in the arms covered in bias tape. The bias tape gives the dress a really professional look. Bias tape can also be used at the hem of a garment to cover the hem. It is so easy to attach and really is beautiful when made out of pretty fabric.

Hand Needles

Hand needles are needed for sewing on buttons.

Iron

Any household iron will do. You will need an iron for pressing seams open and for pressing hems into place.

Large Safety Pin

You will need a large safety pin to help run elastic through the waist band of pants and skirts. Attaching the pin to the end of the elastic helps you to guide the elastic through the waist band.

Pins with ball tips

Pins will be needed to attach pattern pieces to fabric when cutting out your pattern. You will also use them to pin the clothing together before sewing it together.

Plier Kit with Snaps

If you are going to make anything that will require a snap, like baby bibs, you will need a plier kit with the snaps. These are a little pricey, $25. You can buy snaps that can be attached using a mallet (verses having to buy the plier) but I have never been able to get them to work right. I have the plier and my husband attaches all my snaps. Attaching the snap is just something I am not good at so we have a system.

Seam Gauge

A seam gauge is one of the tools I couldn't live without. When making children's clothing you do alot of small measurements and this tool is perfect for that. The paint on mine is actually starting to wear off because it gets used so often.

Scissors

And last but not least, GOOD SCISSORS! Trust me spend a little extra and get a good pair of scissors. A good pair of scissors will make cutting out clothing so much easier. Also with a good pair you can easily cut out multiple items at the same time.

Sewing Basics- Do you need a Serger

One of the best decisions I made after I started sewing was to invest in a serger. I wanted the clothes I made my daughter to have finished seams and using a serger is the easiest way to accomplish that. I have a basic serger that I purchased from Walmart. It is a Brother Serger. It was around $200 and every penny has been well spent.

The machine has lots of options but honestly I leave mine on the basic settings all the time and just use it to serge seams together. Having a serger gives me so many options for sewing and it makes the process so much easier. Sergers are very easy to use. The only confussing part is learning how to thread it. My machine has arrows directing you through the process and also came with an instructional DVD so that took most of the confussion out of the process. You can just thread your machine with a basic color like white and use that color on everything but I am picky and I like my thread to match my outfit so I have invested in thread for my serger in all the main colors.

I use my serge for almost every piece of clothing I make for my girls and my business. The quality of clothing you get is totally worth it. Pieces of clothing last years. Things I made for my oldest are now getting reused for my youngest daughter nearly 4 years later.

Sewing Basics- Picking out a sewing machine

Picking out a sewing machine can be the most confusing part of getting started sewing. If you are only interested in doing basic sewing you just need a simple machine. My first sewing machine was a Singer Prelude. It was a christmas present from my inlaws. It was ordered online from Target. Most all major stores like Walmart and Target sell sewing machines online. This machine had all the features I needed to make children's clothing; a straight stitch, a zig zag stitch, one step button hole feature and a free arm. These are really the only features you will need in constructing children's clothing.

Singer Prelude

After I had mastered all the basic skills of sewing I decided that I wanted to get a machine that offered the ability to do embroidery so I upgraded to the Singer Futura 150. It is a sewing/embroidery machine combo. Here in the south we personalized everything and this was a great way for me to give the basic outfits I was making for my daughter a little embellishment. The Futura is a great machine and I currently use it as my main sewing machine. I no longer use it for embroidery. After I started my children's clothing business I discovered that the Futura just couldn't keep up with my needs so I purchased an embroidery only machine. If you are looking for a machine to make a few items each week for your children and want the ability to personalize them this is you machine. It is easy to use and come at an afforable price. Whatever kind of machine you get it will take awhile to get to know it but with a little practice you will get it. One thing I did when I first got my machine was purchase some cheap fabric to practice with. That way I didn't get upset when my first couple trys didn't turn out like I had hoped.

How I learned to sew

When my first daughter was born one of my favorite things was going to boutiques or shopping online for her. There were so many pretty things and I wanted them all. I am a stay at home mom so unfortunately our budget didn't allow for very many $50+ outfits that could only be worn a handful of times. I had grown up wearing outfits made by my Grandmother and Mom and I had heard my Mother in law talk about making clothes for my husband so I decided to give it a try. My in-laws purchased me a simple sewing machine and some sewing supplies and I got started. My machine came with an instructional DVD and that is were I learned most of the basics. My Mom and Mother in law both gave me a few lessons on cutting out patterns and putting things together but overall I basiclly taught myself. The key to my success was that I tried and stick with simple patterns that were within my sewing ability. I quickly found that patterns that included a step by step tutorial were the best for beginners. Having step by step instructions really makes a difference when you are going through the creation process for the first time. One of the best parts of sewing for children is you really only need to know how to make a few pieces. There are so many beautiful fabrics out there you can make a simple dress and pants and it looks great because of the fabric design.

As my abilities advanced I even learned how to design my own patterns and how to simplify them so they were easy and quick for me to make. After having great success using these patterns for the past few years I have recently started offering my patterns along with step by step tutorials explaining how to create the items. I'm so excited that I am finally in a position to help others learn to sew.

I am so proud of myself for learning to sew. It has given me the abilty have tons of beautiful clothes for my girls for very little money. And the best part is that I have the abilty to create an additional income for my family.

My Mom has a funny story she tell people about me learning to sew. Four years ago when I told her I my inlaws were getting me a sewing machine she was really nice and supportive about it. Secretly later that evening she and my Dad kind of joked that my inlaws were probably wasting their money because I could barely sew on a button let alone make an outfit. My Mom just beams with pride when she finishes the story letting people know that she has eaten her words for the past 3 years. And she gets the chance to tell her story often since we receive compliments almost everytime we go out and one of the girls are wearing something I have made.

To anyone out there that wants to learn but doesn't think they can do it. Give it a try. You don't have to know all the fancy terms. You just need to know the basics, stick with simple tutorial patterns and be able to pick out pretty fabric.

Summer Shorts Pattern

Livi Stitches Patterns has a new pattern available in Livi Stitches Pattern Shop on Etsy. It is called the Summer Shorts. They are simple shorts with an elastic waist. These are so easy to make. It takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish. I will be making lots of these for my daughters this week. They are absolutely perfect for summer and since they take less 1/2 a yard to make they are super inexpensive. They will look adorable and I won't have to constantly worry about them ruining an expensive outfit.

Fabric Scrap Doll- Arts and Crafts Tutorial for Preschoolers

My oldest daugther is 4 and she is out of preschool for the summer. She loves arts and crafts so we have been trying to do an arts and crafts project everyday. I have a huge box of fabric scraps so I have been trying to incorporate them into our crafts. Today we made a cute little girl using fabric scraps. It turned out so cute and my little one had a blast.

Fabric Scrap Doll Tutorial
Gather up some construction paper (one sheet for the background and one for the face), some fabric scraps, buttons, glue and a marker.
Draw a circle for the face and cut it out
Cut a triangle for the dress using a fabric scrap.
Glue fabric dress to paper.

Glue Face to top of dress.

(Isn't she cute ?)

Glue Buttons onto face to create the eyes.

Cut up fabric scraps into small pieces and glue them around the face to create the hair.

Next draw on the mouth, arms and legs.
Then glue fabric scrap squares to create the hands and feed.

She was so proud of her creation and had so much fun. Her little fabric scrap girl is now hanging in a place of honor in her room.

Anyone have any suggestions for art projects for preschoolers?
I would absolutely love to hear them.

Different Direction

Livi Ruffle Pants Pattern

On Friday I got an unexpected suprise. Livi Stitches Patterns FINALLY had its first sale. The Lucy Skirt has been available for a few months, but hadn't had any interest. I wasn't too disappointed by this because I know most successful pattern designers have multiple patterns available. Unfortunately my motivation to design more patterns hasn't been that great. Thankfully that first sale gave me the motivation I needed (and Memorial Day Weekend gave me the time) to get my 2nd pattern created. I decided to do the Livi Ruffle Pants. This is the pattern I designed when I started my business 3 years ago. I have created hundreds of these with much success. It was a long and hard process getting all put together but now that it is finished I am so proud of it. Learning to make these pants allowed me to make so many outfits for my girls and I am really excited about the opportunity to teach other women to make them.

My little baby is entering into the teething phase. It is so tough to see her in pain. An Update about Livi Stitches New Look

I recently gave http://www.livistitches.net/ a new look. In the past I had two seperate shops. I had my Livi Stitches Etsy Shop and I had http://www.livistitches.net/. Most of my sales came through etsy but I still liked having my own site. Recently managing two sites that basically sold the same things was getting to be too expensive and too much work for me so I changed up http://www.livistitches.net/. Now when customers go to that site they will be redirected to my Etsy Shop. This is so much easier for me and I can direct customers to one site and they can see everything I have to offer; children's clothing, patterns, fabric, and gifts.

With this new change I also added a few new products. GIFTS! I am now offering personalized aprons and Kitchen towels and holiday kitchen towels. You can check out all the options here. Livi Stitches Patterns

I am so excited to finally be able to say that Livi Stitches Pattern shop is FINALLY open and our first Pattern is now available.

I was blessed to be able to teach myself to sew and have been able to make lots of beautiful clothing for my daughters and others. My goal with Livi Stitches Patterns is to create very simple patterns that beginning sewers can easily make. Each pattern contains pattern pieces along with a step by step tutorial with pictures that guides you through the sewing process. Patterns are delivered as a PDF file that you download directly to your compter and print out on your home printer.

I have quite a few patterns in the works but for now I only have one completed. I am hoping to eventually have about 10 patterns available.

I'm Back

I am almost 3 months late in getting this posted but I wanted to introduce Miss Lucy to everyone. She was born the first week in November, She weighted 9 lbs, 10 ozs and was 20.5 inches long. So far she has been a healthy, happy and easy going baby. And I am so proud to say that Big Sister Olivia just adores her. We are loving every minute of being a family of 4.

Livi Stitches reopened not long after Lucy arrived. I am just selling applique shirts. I have had many inquires about where the pants went but for now this is what is best for us. I am still able to have my create outlet and part time income but I am able to have the time I need with my Family.

Taking a little break

Well the time has finally come for me to take a little break from Livi Stitches. I am expecting my 2nd child, Lucy, the 1st week in November so Livi Stitches will be closed from October through December. I will be using this time to finish up orders and prepare for her arrivial and then enjoy a few weeks with her and recover.

During my time off I am hoping to also work on a few special projects for Livi Stitches that I have been working on for quite a while but haven't had time to complete. This is Livi Stitches Children's Clothing Patterns that will be available in my new Etsy shop Livi Stitches Closet. My idea is to create very simple and easy children's clothing and accessories patterns for beginners. Learning to sew can often seem harder than it really is so I am hoping I can put together some nice tutorials to share some of my knowledge with others.

Studio Makeover

Today I FINALLY did what I have been wanting to do for nearly a year. I converted my guest bedroom into a studio. I have been sewing in there for a year now but we had a bed in that room so I only had a corner of the room. Well today we decided it was time for Livi to move into a big girl bed and I finally got my studio. I have been imaging how I wanted the room to look for months now so it didn't take me long to move everything around. My favorite part is that Livi has her own big area to play in. She had an area before but it was small. I am also loving all the empty space in the middle of the room. I can actually walk around in there. I think this is a great start to 2010.

Livi Stitches First Craft Show- Rain, Rain, Rain!!!

Livi Stitches had our first craft show this weekend. There is a large festival a few towns away from where I live called Mule Day. This is a huge festival with tons of events and usually has an attendence of 25,000 plus. I attend every year and since I started Livi Stitches a few years ago I have been wanting to participate and decided that this year would be the year. I would like to tell you that it went great but it poured down rain the entire time and very few people showed up. We got up at 4:00 A.M. that morning got ready and headed out. We arrived at around 5:45 and we were able to set up super fast. I had everything all set up by 7:00 a.m. and we were relaxing eating breakfast and chatting when the rain started and never went away. A few people came out and fought the rain but for the most part it was dead. I wasn't too upset about not selling the small inventory of items I had made for the sale but that I wasn't able to give out alot of busines cards. My big goal for participating in this event was to be able to advertise my website and let people know I am out there so I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to do as much networking. However the day wasn't a total loss I got the experience of setting up, I got to see what the whole craft show sceen is like, I got to meet lots of nice people, and the best part was getting to spend some extra time with my husband Kyler, my MIL, my friend Ally at Southern Scrapbooking, and her mom. So even though it didn't go well I am proud of myself for trying and having the courage to go out there.

I would also like to give a huge thank you to my husband for all his hard work in helping me get everything ready, making the clothing rack and for going with me saturday and showing me so much support. Thank you to my mother in law Jana for getting up at 4:00 a.m. on a saturday and going out and helping us. My Parents for taking care of Olivia for me Friday night and saturday and for being so great to bring her home and even bringing us dinner. And Thank You to my friend Ally for agreeing to do this show with me and for giving me motivation and inspiration the last few weeks. Livi Stitches Tent

A few weekends ago I decided to try and do a little mini photo session. I had quite a few outfits that I needed to get some product photos of and my favorite little model and in a great mood so we packed up a bag of clothes, accessories, and my camera and headed out the door. My husbands grandfather has a farm and I knew it would be a perfect location. Luckily everything was on my side that day and I got some great shots.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a sweet customer about my lounge pants and asked me if I would ship to Australia. I told her of course and after a few emails back and forth we had all the details worked out and Livi Stitches had our very first international sale. I am so excited that I can say that Livi Stitches clothes are being worn in most of the states in the U.S.A. and now we are being worn in Australia also. Exciting to think about where we'll be next!

I am going to try and start a new feature on my blog telling you about my favorite Etsy purchases. There are some amazing things to purchase on Etsy and I am happy that I am able to support the handmade community and share these amazing products with you.

Last week was my wonderful father's birthday so I set out to find a great unique gift for him on Etsy. During my search I stumbled upon the shop A Breath of French Air and discovered her A hunting we will go soap. My Dad loves to hunt so no scent soap is something he uses alot during the winter. I knew it would be the perfect gift so after a few quick convos with Elizabeth the owner I had made my purchase and she had even offered to ship the gift directly to my Dad. The package arrived very quickly and Dad loved his gift. One of the most unique features of the A hunting we will go soap is that it comes wrapped in recipes from a recycled game recipe book. Dad loved that extra touch and is looking forward to having some new recipes to try out.
